Mercedes Adblue System Error

How to Solve Adblue System Error in Mercedes GLC

As a Mercedes GLC owner and driver, you will be well accustomed to all the luxury, class, and reliability the brand brings to the table. But, if you happen to drive one of Mercedes’ SUVs, you will also recognise the importance of using a Mercedes expert to regularly maintain and service your GLC to keep it performing at its best.

Finding a garage that can offer you great value for money, a speedy diagnosis, whilst not compromising on great service and a high quality repair is not always easy. That’s where Fitch Autos can help!

Find out more about the issue one of our clients, Mr D, had with his Mercedes GLC in our latest blog. He came to Fitch Autos complaining about an Adblue issue and multiple warnings lights in the dash of his SUV.

Matt, one of our Mercedes experts, listened to the client’s feedback in detail, before starting his investigation on this Mercedes GLC. Read on to find out what the issue was and how Fitch Autos fixed it!

Faults Found

Matt’s first task was to verify the customer’s complaints and ensure he was addressing the correct issue, as the problem often lies in a different area than what the client reports.

Our Mercedes technician performed a visual inspection of the vehicle, looking underneath the Mercedes GLC, inside the engine bay, and around the Adblue container. Luckily, there were no leaks in the system, which meant that the issue lay somewhere else.

Next, Matt looked at the warnings in the dash and found some troubling information. The vehicle’s computer wasn’t able to read the Adblue fluid levels, which could lead to start-up and other major problems in the future.

Therefore, it became absolutely necessary for the client’s Mercedes to receive some overdue maintenance and repairs. But before Matt could get into any of that, he had to initiate the 15-step diagnostic procedure. This method is used at Fitch Autos to ensure no stone is left unturned and that the entire problem is solved in one go.

Diagnostic Procedure

All of our Mercedes technicians use the in-depth diagnostic process because it allows our specialists to find the root cause of the problem and apply a solution on time. On top of that, the 15 steps ensure we don’t miss a thing during the diagnosis. No issue goes unnoticed and our technicians hit the spot every time!

Matt followed the same routine, as he moved to the full vehicle software evaluation. He used the Mercedes Manufacturer software called Xentry (the same technology used by Mercedes Benz dealers) to find the relevant fault codes, affecting the Adblue system:

  • P246309 – Component fault, diesel or gasoline particulate filter soot content not ok
  • P20F500 – The Adblue consumption is too high

The fault codes confirmed that the Adblue system was malfunctioning and it required immediate attention. However, the fault codes rarely go into detail. They tell you the problem area and a vague idea of what the issue might be. After that, it is up to the technician to analyse and solve the malfunction. Luckily, our Mercedes expert is highly skilled and he knows how to solve issues like this in no time.

So, after the software evaluation procedure was out of the way, Matt began to test the data coming in and going out of the Adblue system. He was trying to ensure there were no leaks or electrical wiring issues with the component.

The live data was fine and the Engine Control Unit (ECU) was receiving uninterrupted signals from the Adblue system. Once that was out of the way, Matt carried out tests on the Adblue system to check the fluid levels and their quality.

Our Mercedes specialist caught the culprit in its tracks, thanks to multiple tests. It turned out, that the Adblue fluid was overflowing from the container, making it difficult for the ECU to measure the quantity.

This also meant one more thing:

If the Adblue fluid would have been left like that, the client’s Mercedes GLC could have developed a terminal issue. Luckily, Mr D was quick to act when he brought over his vehicle to Fitch Autos.

Solving The Problem

Once our Mercedes specialist had discovered the issue, it was time to employ the solution. So, without wasting any time, Matt began carefully draining the Adblue fluid from its container to the optimal level. He put the extra fluid aside to discard safely later.

Afterwards, our Mercedes technician used the dealer technology to carry out adaptations and tests on the Adblue system. Everything turned out fine, which meant all Matt now needed to do was to clear the error codes from the system and check again.

Our Mercedes expert used the Xentry software to clear the previous codes and look for new ones. Luckily, nothing new turned up except that the vehicle required a software update. So, Matt got to work, updating the Mercedes.

Not long after, our Mercedes expert took the GLC on a test drive to check its performance. Thankfully, everything was working fine and there were no warning lights or messages in the dash. So, Matt brought the Mercedes GLC back and handed over the keys to a very happy customer.
